Her company has survived over two decades and made its mark on multiple continents. On an episode of ABC Radios No Limits with Rebecca Jarvis, Smilovic shared five key tips for building a fashion line today.

She recalled designing jackets and dresses early on that might have looked good, but because she didnt have a technical designer, at the time, the clothes wouldnt fit whoever was wearing them. I would balance out my weaknesses, she said. So if you know that you are great with numbers and can really e in there deep, then I would have some creative, throbbing left brain around me, and vice versa.

She has seen the fashion industry transform from one year to the next its digital disruption. Although ecommerce has reinvented the way consumers shop, the Tibi founder believes that relationships with department stores remain essential. I think those relationships are incredibly important, she explained. I think that it is a real misguided notion for a lot of people that you can go straight, direct to [the] consumer that you will turn on that ecommerce light and build it and they will come. They will not come.

Ansari and a friend started Artizara years ago as a way to creatively celebrate their Muslim identity after the / terrorist attacks. Ansari said the tragedies led much of the American public to think of all Muslims as the same and in a negative light.

Sarah is considered a pioneer in the emerging global modest shion scene and super inspirational, Gould said via email. Her passion for positive change and building understanding shines through everything she does. Its a great blessing to know her and work on creative projects together.

The women wearing high heels, flowing calflength dresses and longsleeved tunics with pants looked like any other models in coolweather attire, except one sported a turban and two others were in headscarves.

On a windswept oceanfront catwalk in Encinitas on Sunday afternoon, a team of models swept past rows of admiring customers atArtizaras first independent shion show.

Ansari doesnt disclose annual sales but she said Artizara is a small company with moonshot ambitions thanks to its market potential.

We were being seen as a collective, but were so erse, said Ansari, who moved to the U.S. from Pakistan years ago with her husband, cardiologistAthar Ansari. As a MuslimAmerican, I had a desire to do something about it and shion was a way to show that ersity.

Yet despite the of this stgrowing demographic, shion companies have only recently begun to respond to its needs. The first allhijab collection debuted in at New York Fashion Week and this spring Nike will introduce its first hijab tracksuit for women athletes.

Ansari said she knew she had a crossover brand when she wore her Goulddesigned, longsleeve Tshirts out in public I would be standing in line at Starbucks and Id get a tap, tap, tap on my shoulder from women asking me, where did you get your top?

Ansari and Gould admit theres a strong global current of antiMuslim sentiment that they continuously swim against. Ansari said Internet trolls continually click on her online ads just to send hate mail.

Artizaras clothing is midpriced, with pieces starting at and topping out at .

Women choose to cover themselves for many reasons, Ansari said. Some cover for piety, some cover for identity, some cover for mily reasons and some cover just to stir the pot. Womens bodies have been a battleground for people who are not women for thousands of years. Its time that we, as women, take over that debate.

When / happened two years later, Ansari began talking over ideas with a fellow Muslim woman friend who was an engineer at Qualcomm. Both were frustrated over the difficulty of finding attractive modest professional attire. Ansari doesnt wear short skirts or shortsleeve shirts and she doesnt wear a hijab or headscarf.

Many of the items feature patterns inspired by Islamic art mosaics mixed with Arabic calligraphy that were designed byPeter Gould, an artist and entrepreneur from Australia who converted to Islam in . He said Ansari is on the cutting edge of the Islamic shion trend.

Gould said Artizara represents a growing Muslim chic trend among young Muslims worldwide who want to express themselves creatively with new brands and imaginative products.

If I didnt love it so much I wouldve quit long ago, she said. I think its deeply needed, deeply personal and very fulfilling.

Ansari said Artizara distinguishes itself from other modestwear shion companies because it is centered around the beauty of Islamic art, not the Islamic religion. In ct, many customers are nonMuslims who like the designs and prefer more skin coverage.

As the business has slowly grown, Ansari said it has become more than a fulltime job, but she wouldnt consider giving it up because the need is so great.

This was a comingout party, of sorts, for parttime Encinitas resident Sarah Ansari, a bankerturnedshionista who makes and markets Islamic artinspired modest clothing to Muslim women around the world.

Shes also accustomed to criticism on the powerlessness and subjugation of women who wear hijabs, abayas and other headtotoe attire.

Were not trying to be religious. Were not advocating a of dress. We are just responding to this very young, very vibrant, very hopeful and very artistic community to produce a brand that celebrates identity, she said.

We want to see positive change in our world, like all young people, though we may have a particular lens through ith as one of our inspirations, Gould said.

Ansari learned to sew as a child in Pakistan, but shion was never her passion; numbers were. A few years after moving to the U.S. in , the Ansaris settled in L.A. where she earned an MBA, worked in banking and finance, and had four children. In , they moved to San Diego, where they split their time between homes in Alpine and Encinitas.

After much planning and consultation, Artizara made its debut in at the annual Islamic Society of North America convention in Chicago. Ansari and her partner, who she bought out a few years later, went in with low expectations, but the piece inaugural line was a smash. Writeups soon followed in theWashington PostandNew York Times.

The market is huge but it hasnt been properly targeted to mainstream businesses, Ansari said.
